Modern residential design is increasingly moving toward open spaces, clean lines, and architectural elements that feel lighter and more integrated into the home. One of the most effective ways to achieve this look is with a custom floating steel staircase.

Unlike a traditional enclosed staircase, a floating stair system uses a carefully engineered steel structure to support the treads while keeping the overall design visually open. Depending on the architecture of the home, the staircase can be built with a single center stringer, exposed plate stringers, or other custom steel configurations.

Why Steel Works So Well for Floating Stairs

Steel provides the structural strength needed to create long spans and minimal profiles that would be difficult to achieve with conventional wood framing.

This allows the staircase itself to become part of the architecture rather than simply a way to move between floors.

A properly designed steel stair can combine:

  • custom fabricated steel stringers and supports
  • wood stair treads
  • steel, glass, or mixed-material guardrails
  • integrated handrails
  • custom landings and connections
  • powder-coated or other architectural metal finishes

The result can be extremely minimal while still providing the strength required for a permanent structural installation.

Steel and Wood: A Natural Combination

One of our favorite combinations for modern residential stairs is a fabricated steel structure paired with solid wood treads.

The steel creates the clean architectural framework, while natural wood adds warmth and prevents the staircase from feeling overly industrial.

Wood species, thickness, stain, and finish can all be selected to complement flooring, cabinetry, doors, and other elements throughout the home.

At TOR Ornamental Metal, we can coordinate both the steel fabrication and custom wood treads, helping maintain the correct fit between the two components throughout fabrication and installation.

The Details Matter

Floating stairs may appear simple, but achieving that simplicity requires careful planning.

Stringer placement, tread dimensions, connections, railing attachment points, finished floor elevations, and surrounding walls all need to be considered before fabrication begins.

This is especially important when steel railings or guardrails are incorporated into the staircase. Planning these components together allows attachment points to be integrated into the structure rather than added as an afterthought.
For custom projects, we work from architectural and engineering drawings and develop the fabrication details required to turn the design into a buildable steel assembly.
Custom Fabrication Instead of a Standard Stair System

Every home is different.

Rather than adapting a prefabricated staircase to an existing space, custom fabrication allows the structure, proportions, railing design, tread material, and finish to be developed around the architecture of the home.

This makes floating steel stairs particularly well suited for contemporary renovations and new construction where the staircase is intended to be a major visual feature.
